Nameri National Park

destination ..........wild!
Nameri National Park covering an area of about 200sq. kms is located at the
foothills of eastern Himalayas about 35km from Tezpur, the nearest town. The
park is the second Tiger reserve of Assam. The park consists of deciduous
forests, hills and the river Jia Bhoroli flows through it. Nameri was set up
as a sanctuary on 18th September 1985 with an area of 137 sq km which was
actually a part of Naduar Forest Reserve. Later another 75sq km was added to
it making it an area of 212 sq km and on 15th November, 1998 it was
officially established as a National park.

The other reason Nameri national park is famous for, is the herds of
elephants. Nameri national park have a high density of elephant population
and due to lessening of forest cover, they sometimes invade human inhabited
villages, which have attracted the attention of wildlife conservationists
worldwide.
Nameri beckons.......................
Jia Bhoroli river of Assam is famous for the Mahseer angling, since the
time of British. This perennial river enters Assam in the plains, near
Bhalukpung after swirling through the rugged mountains of Arunachal. Its is
home of the Golden Mahseer- The Tiger of Indian rivers and a catch for any
angler. H.S. Tomas wrote in his book, 'The Rod In India', ..."Pound to
Pound, the Mahseer is superior in sporting qualities to the lordly Salmon of
my Native land." Being in the National Park, only game angling (tag and
release) is allowed during season from October to April.
Wildlife Attractions in Nameri National Park
Mammals :
Assamese Macaque, Capped Langur, Wild dog, Golden Backed Jackal, Bengal
Fox, Civet Cat, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Tiger, Leopard, Jungle
Cat, Leopard Cat, Fishing Cat Indian Grey Mongoose, Wild Boar, Indian
Porcupine, Indian Pangolin, Fulvous Fruit Eating Bat, Flying Squirrel.
Flora :
The floral wealth of the park is very significant. The Natural Forest
species are like Bombax ceiba, Dalbergia sisoo, Sterculia villosa, Trewia
nudiflora, Zizypphus jujuba, Litsaea polyantha, etc. Among the non aquatic
grassland species the prominent are Phragmites karka, Arundo donax, Imperata
cylindrical, Saccarum spp. etc. The aquatic grass/plants species are
Andropogon spp., Ipomea reptans, Enhydra flushians, Nymphia spp., Wichornia
spp. etc
Birds :
Home to the White bellied heron and White Winged Duck the Nameri Tiger
Reserve is also a fabulous bird watching destination. Lesser racket tailed
Drongos, Beautiful Nuthatch, Grey headed Fishing Eagle, Jerdon's Baza and
many more extremely difficult species are to be expected.
Insects :
Nameri national park being an aqua habitat along with moist deciduous
forest is teeming with insect life. From butterflies and moths to the
incredible variety of spiders and ants and termites Nameri is a treat for
any entomologist.
How to get there :
Air : The nearest airport is Saloni about 10-km from
Tezpur, in Sonitpur district, which is 181-km away from Guwahati.
Rail : The nearest railway station is Rangapara 60-kms
from Bhalukpong, which is 21-km from the park, in Sonitpur district.
Road : Regular buses ply to and from Tezpur, which is
well connected with all the major cities of Assam.
