
Gorumara
National park is the latest addition in the list of National parks of India.
The park is popular for being one of the last small pockets in Eastern India
with a natural population of the Great Indian one horned Rhinoceros. The
Indian Elephant and the Indian Bison are also found. The National Park is
found in the localities of Lataguri, Chalsa and Nagrakata, beside National
Highway 31 which connects Siliguri and Guwahati. Siliguri is well connected
by air, with flights from Calcutta, Delhi and Guwahati. The reserve was
established in the year 1992 as National park spanning over 80 km of diverse
forests.
Location :
Located on the bank of rivers Murti and Raidak has vegetation of riverine
grasslands interspersed with savannah woodlands.
Wild Life in Gorumara :
Most common animals found in Gorumara are one horned Indian rhino, Elephant
, Indian Bison, Leopards and deer as they regularly come to the salt
reservoir just below the tower. Visitors need to obtain a special permission
to enter into the core area of the park.
Chirpy Birds :
The major avifuana species seen in Gorumara include Minivets, Pheasants,
Hornbills, Woodpeckers, Cuckoos, cormorants, Pigeons and Mynas.During the
winter months, migratory birds including The Brahminy duck, Ibis, Stork and
other varieties can also be found here.
Tourist spots :
As far tourist attraction are concerned, the park has many surrounding it.
Lataguri, a small town adjacent to the park, forms the entry point. There
are watch towers for viewing the animals inside the park. They are
Jatraprasad Watch tower , Rhino observation point in front of the Gorumara
forest bungalow, Old Khunia Watch Tower near the Murti forest bungalow and
Suksukia Bird watching Point. Rhino observation point is the ideal point to
observe wild animals like rhino, elephant, bison and deer as they regularly
come to the salt reservoir just below the tower.
Best Seasons :
The best seasons to visit the exotic abode is between November to April,
The park is closed from mid June to mid September
